Let’s talk classic culinary combinations. Peanut butter and jelly. Tomato and basil. Salt and Pepper. Popcorn and butter. Chips and salsa. Cookies and milk. Chocolate and pretzels. Actually, just about any combination of sweet and salty together. Pineapple and mozzarella?
Don’t believe me? It’s okay…I respect the skepticism. It doesn’t seem like a match made in heaven, but take a leap of faith. Hawaiian pizza is an adventurous take on a classic cheese pizza, and encompasses everything irresistible about the sweet and salty. The bacon and mozzarella lend the salty bite, while the pineapple shines with subtle sweetness to create…BALANCE.
This is a perfect pizza to make when you are craving something sweet and salty, but is also great if you are taking a stay-cation through food. I am certainly a believer in the connection between smell and memory; this pizza reminds me of vacation. And who doesn’t like to go on vacation on a Thursday night?
- 1 ball pizza dough (homemade or store bought)
- 1 c. tomato sauce
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 1/2 c. shredded mozzarella cheese
- 3 slices turkey bacon (or regular bacon), chopped
- Approximately 1/2 c. diced pineapple (I use frozen pineapple tidbits)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Lightly flour the pizza dough and roll out to fit a baking sheet.
Transfer dough to baking sheet. Its okay if it looks “rustic”.
Spread tomato sauce over the dough leaving a 1 inch border. Sprinkle dried oregano over the tomato sauce.
Next, generously distribute the mozzarella cheese and top with chopped turkey bacon and pineapple.
Bake in the preheated oven until the crust is golden brown, the bacon is crispy, and the mozzarella begins to brown; about 15-20 minutes. Slice into your favorite shape and enjoy!
