Fourth of July 2014 Recap

Long weekends are the best! I was fortunate enough to have a four…count ’em FOUR…days off this weekend. I packed a whole lot of fun into just four days, but it was so worth it! I might need another day off to recover from my break…

Thursday started with breakfast quesadillas, blogging (one of my favorite things to do), and lounging around in my pj’s until (I’m covering my eyes in embarrassment) 1:00 in the afternoon. I have a feeling I would be in BIG trouble if I worked from home. Although I wouldn’t mind forgoing the work clothes for a couple weeks…not one bit. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in writing, editing, and sharing that I completely lose track of time. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! Thursday evening we got together with my husband’s aunt and uncle and had a GREAT time catching up, drinking sangria, and showing off our house. We always have such a great time with them; I love them! :)

Friday was the 4th of July! We started by running some necessary errands and getting ready for our family dinner celebration. Recipes coming soon! I will give you one hint: beer + chicken + grill = AMAZING! If you follow me on Instagram you might already know where I’m going with this…

Some of my family stopped by for a delicious BBQ and, of course, more sangria. Later, a few neighbors got together and watched fireworks. I feel so blessed to have such great people living near us; it really makes a new house feel more like home. This is our first 4th of July here and I must admit the neighborhood puts on a good fireworks show! My favorites are the purple ones with the swirly bits at the end; my husband says I’m predictable like that. :) Lola, on the other hand, doesn’t have a favorite firework and would prefer to hide behind the toilet or under the covers until the whole mess passes. Poor girl.

We visited the Farmer’s Market on Saturday because, even though its a holiday, you still have to eat! The crowd was a little sparse compared to most weekends but the vendors were boasting some of the best produce so far this year! We picked up blueberries, green beans, kale, garlic, onions, cucumber, and green bell peppers. The blueberries and green beans are frozen for later; I really am serious about this freezing mission, I promise.

After the market we loaded up the bikes and headed to the local metro-park to go for a ride. The weather was absolutely perfect for bike riding: sunny and warm with a cool breeze. We rode about 6 miles and I thought my legs were going to fall off by the second time around the “big” hill, haha. Apparently my stamina is much to be desired, but I had a blast! The park decided to test the tornado sirens while we were there; a fellow exerciser stopped to ask if it was a test…after a quick look at the bright blue cloudless sky I chuckled and confirmed. :) Since we were so active that day I made bacon and kale mac and cheese for dinner, of course.

Today I attended the bridal shower of one of my friends since elementary school! We met in fourth grade and she is getting married in 34 days! Her bridal shower brunch was gorgeous and so much fun! She looked beautiful, the food was great, and I’m even more excited for her wedding now!

I was honored when she asked me to do a reading during the ceremony and have already started looking for the perfect shoes to wear. Heels are a must when you are short like I am! Sorry for the iPhone photos…

Wow, what a great long weekend. I think now its time to kick up my feet, watch Food Network Star, and RELAX!

Lola agrees.
